Hal Holbrook Set to Perform “Mark Twain Tonight!” at The Dixie

Actor takes the stage in the theatre named in his honor

(HUNTINGDON; April 2, 2007) – A LIVING BREATHING AMERICAN MASTERPIECE! It is, quite simply, one of the most acclaimed and enduring performances in the history of theatre. Nearly 50 years ago, a young actor took the stage in a tiny off-Broadway theatre and introduced the world to a man they'd never forget. The actor was Hal Holbrook. The man was Mark Twain.

Now, Holbrook will return to The Dixie Carter Performing Arts and Academic Enrichment Center, Home of the Hal Holbrook Theatre to perform “Mark Twain Tonight!” on Thursday, May 10th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Monday, April 16th at 10:00 a.m. Tickets may be purchased in person at The Dixie Box Office window OR online at www.dixiepac.net. Phone purchases WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE. Ticket prices are $75 each.

“Holbrook’s characterization of the great novelist and raconteur is, to this day, a work in progress. The transformation is so complete as to be almost unsettling at times. The combination of Holbrook’s physical and vocal talents and the potency of Twain’s words is a mesmerizing thing to behold.” – The Washington Post

“It’s all very politically incorrect and very, very funny. Holbrook as Twain had the nearly full house screaming with laughter and crying for mercy. If you’d closed your eyes during Holbrook’s tour de force, you’d have sworn this was a contemporary commentary.” - The Desert Sun Palm Desert, CA.

The Dixie Announces New Adult Theatre Troupe – The Dixie Players

“Crimes of the Heart” slated as first show

(HUNTINGDON; April 2, 2007) – The Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center is excited to announce a new program to their community arts repertoire – The Dixie Players. An adult theatre performance troupe, The Dixie Players, will perform “Crimes of the Heart” as their inaugural production.

There is no participation fee associated with The Dixie Players, and a free audition workshop is currently being planned for Saturday, April 28, 2007 from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. at The Dixie. Auditions for “Crimes of the Heart” are Monday and Tuesday, May 14 and 15, 2007 beginning at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Rehearsals will begin on Monday, May 21, and performance dates are set for June 28 – 30, 2007.

Parts for “Crimes of the Heart” include two (2) male roles and four (4) female roles for persons between the ages of 18 – 40 years old. “Crimes of the Heart” is directed by Kimberli Hood Easley who serves as The Dixie Youth Theatre’s Artistic Director.

“Crimes of the Heart” is a fun house of accelerating, rollicking misfortune, a family drama filled with love, eccentricities, and Southern Gothic humor. The three MaGrath sisters gather together in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, when the youngest of them shoots her bigwig politico husband in the stomach because, as she bluntly explains, “I just didn’t like his stinking looks.” The eldest sister, keeper of the family home, is celebrating her thirtieth birthday, acutely aware of her lack of romantic prospects; the headstrong middle sibling has returned to recover from her failure to launch a singing career in Hollywood. As they tease and provoke each other and revel in shared memories and forgotten dreams, the reader is treated to “a play rich with wisdom about the way people respond to life” (Pulitzer Prize Committee).
